During the long lockdown, I tried to review what I do as a musician.

I was extremely fortunate to be able to perform with world class early music ensembles in London since I have moved to UK. However, how many times have I performed in Birmingham, where I live? Maybe once an year for a local performance of the St. John or St. Mathew’s passion…other than that, there has been very few opportunities for me to perform in this very vibrant city.

The time I had last year gave me the chance to plan a concert I’d like to play. Most of my work come from ensembles in London. It’s nice and I enjoy that aspect too, but it’s usually already organised by someone else and I don’t get to choose the programme. This time, I could choose the musicians I trust to perform music we love, while being mindful so audience will love them and find it easy to understand!
I happen to know two excellent musicians who live not too far away from Birmingham: Annabel Knight (Recorder/ Traverso) and Robin Bigwood (Keybord).

Last year around this time, we had a zoom meeting and agreed to plan a concert. After an year, with the help of the generosity of St. Mary’s Parish Church in Handsworth, this dream has come true. In fact, our enthusiasm to introduce the attractive world of baroque music to wider audience is so strong that we set the ticket price very low- just £5 for adults and free for anyone under the age of 18! (No need to buy tickets in advance, but please pay by contactless card at the door.)

This concert, by the newly-formed Turini Ensemble, presents an hour of exciting and often emotionally-moving music from the lavish and colourful baroque era. Though some composers may be unfamiliar, the pieces are attractive and tuneful, often incorporating the ‘pop song’ and haunting folk melodies of the day.

The musicians of Turini Ensemble, all experienced professional players, and using beautiful baroque-style instruments – violin, recorder and harpsichord – will give some short, informal introductions to each work during the concert. I really hope to see as many of you as possible at the concert!
